"Accelerating globalization of cultural, technological, economic, and demographic flows is rapidly and profoundly transforming the institutions that produce and disseminate knowledge (Friedman, 2001, p. 504)...Underlying the calls for an interdisciplinary component to liberal education is the recognition that interdisciplinary study encourages 'breadth of vision and the development of the skills of integration and synthesis so frequently demanded by the problems of a culture in the midst of a profound transition' (Newell & Green, 1982, p. 23)."
